The importance of adult play
Updated: Apr 22
We often talk about play as something children do, because their drive for play is so strong. But play is not just important for children; it can be a great source of relaxation and stimulation for adults as well. Many of our research sessions while developing Aurogames have been directed to adults, and we have started to introduce them to elderly as well.
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” George Bernard Shaw
Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, we stopped playing. We lead such busy lives, with focus on work and family commitments, and fun and play is something we don’t take time to enjoy anymore. When we do need a break, we turn to the screen, or perhaps a book, but we seldom play.
Here is a habit to change, because play is beneficial for people of all ages. It will give joy, relieve stress, help you relax, and offer an opportunity for focused attention away from the screen. Play makes you feel good. Games in the form of puzzles challenge the brain and can help to prevent memory problems by improving brain function. It also boosts creativity, inspiration and curiosity. Play stimulates imagination, helping to adapt and solve problems.
Play can be done alone, or together with a child, family member, a colleague or a friend. It is an effective tool for keeping relationships fresh and exciting. Playing together brings joy, vitality, and resilience. It improves connection when sharing laughter and fun.
Now is the time to introduce new habits that bring mindfulness and richness to your everyday life. Give yourself moments of play in your busy schedule. Alone or with someone you care about. Observe how it makes you feel, and the value it brings to your day. How it makes you connect to yourself or to someone else. To balance a fast pace with stopping and being in the moment. To experience mindfulness.
Aurogames can be played alone or collaboratively. They are for people of all ages. If you like to paint you will enjoy many hours creating your own Pattern Building Activity . If you want to explore our kaleidoscope puzzles you can try Level 4 - Pattern Building.
